Machine bias might be the prefabbed amplification of human bias, but to remove it or change it might not be so simple and profound as reading a novel where we identify strongly with a character whose skin-color isn’t ours, or by traveling to another country and seeing, hearing, tasting a world of differences from what we knew. For the machine to relearn…well, that is what I’m studying now: Do we deliberately alter all the training data and start over? Or do we build new augmentations, calculate how to ground it differently on lines and lines of JSON-L prompts and responses?

I think there is a nuance missing here - what AI systems are you referring to? Is it generative AI? Is it computer vision? Analytics based on machine learning? It makes a huge difference. I think genAI has not brought many benefits outside the fields of marketing and to an extent IT. I'm open to being proved wrong, but where is the positive impact of genAI on the broader society? Where is the discussion on whether society needs those genAI chatbots? Where is the question what is the unseen, not measured impact of AI? Philosophical questions like thatI are important.
Yes, machine learning in some of its applications is potentially life-changing. But a chatbot that is addictive, spreads false information, is overhyped to an extent that costs people jobs has to be criticized for its lack of intelligence and reasoning. Because if it isn't, then a huge amount of CEOs etc. will use that opportunity to lay off half of their workforce based on the promises of a few lunatics in Silicon valley. Words matter and marketing (unfortunately) matters as well. And if you market those genAI tools as intelligent, you will have much more success and hype than if you say they are just stochastic parrots. This is why this philosophical conversation matters.
And finally - I definitely don't think the conversation around AI is shaped by the humanities. There are so few articles focused on the humanities that go mainstream, most media and online attention goes to people like Altman and Musk who have nothing to do with humanities and are blatantly disregarding them. Maybe on Substack there are more people like me writing from the humanities perspective, but the general random person gets almost only the STEM and business point of view.
Sometimes I wonder if the effort most people are putting into understanding what an LLM IS, has something to do with the experience they have HAD.
Let's face it, whether it's kissing up to us or doing something else, we aren't used to using tools that talk back to us - that sometimes lie, that sometimes make simple mistakes, and seem to reveal that they knew they were lying or making simple mistakes only if they are 'caught' red handed. Does it matter whether they are actually 'lying' or 'acting sycophantically'? I'm not so sure that it does.
Maybe we are grasping for the right words, but we all know what we are experiencing and what matters most is the interaction experience we are trying to come to terms with. When you care about your work, as most people do, and you are relying on tools to bring efficiencies, as most people are, you look for ways to properly articulate what you see.
At the same time, I'm not sure that understanding the architecture is all that important (though I recommend it). What people are experiencing is not the underlying model and its highly dimensional vector space.
There is a truth to our experience that we need to honor, and if we have an ambiguous or negative experience, it makes sense to do what people are doing: stepping back and reflecting on 'why'. If this leads you to reject OR accept an LLM, great either way - but the real thing to think about is the fact that we have to step back and reflect on our experience with this in the first place.

I think there is a nuance missing here - what AI systems are you referring to? Is it generative AI? Is it computer vision? Analytics based on machine learning? It makes a huge difference. I think genAI has not brought many benefits outside the fields of marketing and to an extent IT. I'm open to being proved wrong, but where is the positive impact of genAI on the broader society? Where is the discussion on whether society needs those genAI chatbots? Where is the question what is the unseen, not measured impact of AI? Philosophical questions like thatI are important.
Yes, machine learning in some of its applications is potentially life-changing. But a chatbot that is addictive, spreads false information, is overhyped to an extent that costs people jobs has to be criticized for its lack of intelligence and reasoning. Because if it isn't, then a huge amount of CEOs etc. will use that opportunity to lay off half of their workforce based on the promises of a few lunatics in Silicon valley. Words matter and marketing (unfortunately) matters as well. And if you market those genAI tools as intelligent, you will have much more success and hype than if you say they are just stochastic parrots. This is why this philosophical conversation matters.
And finally - I definitely don't think the conversation around AI is shaped by the humanities. There are so few articles focused on the humanities that go mainstream, most media and online attention goes to people like Altman and Musk who have nothing to do with humanities and are blatantly disregarding them. Maybe on Substack there are more people like me writing from the humanities perspective, but the general random person gets almost only the STEM and business point of view.
Sometimes I wonder if the effort most people are putting into understanding what an LLM IS, has something to do with the experience they have HAD.
Let's face it, whether it's kissing up to us or doing something else, we aren't used to using tools that talk back to us - that sometimes lie, that sometimes make simple mistakes, and seem to reveal that they knew they were lying or making simple mistakes only if they are 'caught' red handed. Does it matter whether they are actually 'lying' or 'acting sycophantically'? I'm not so sure that it does.
Maybe we are grasping for the right words, but we all know what we are experiencing and what matters most is the interaction experience we are trying to come to terms with. When you care about your work, as most people do, and you are relying on tools to bring efficiencies, as most people are, you look for ways to properly articulate what you see.
At the same time, I'm not sure that understanding the architecture is all that important (though I recommend it). What people are experiencing is not the underlying model and its highly dimensional vector space.
There is a truth to our experience that we need to honor, and if we have an ambiguous or negative experience, it makes sense to do what people are doing: stepping back and reflecting on 'why'. If this leads you to reject OR accept an LLM, great either way - but the real thing to think about is the fact that we have to step back and reflect on our experience with this in the first place.

The real purpose should be using AI's immense capabilities to tackle significant challenges and enhance our lives, rather than holding onto old ideas about human uniqueness. Accepting that our own thinking also has biases and limits, just like a machine's, is the necessary step. Only then can we have a truly productive discussion about integrating artificial intelligence into our world.
Tim, as someone trying to help bring understanding around the parents community, this is a good reminder to provide a balanced take. I do want people to prioritize the importance of human connection in this digital age. On the other hand, it feels that most people are fluent in the human imperfections that they don’t need reminding. But I’m humble enough to admit I’m still learning what’s the right tone to approach this.

At first scan the article reads like one of those letters I used get from admirers that said, “why do you like “John,” he’s a thug. You can do better.“ My admirer never realized I learned more about him in those two lines.
Like my admirer, the writer seems challenged by AI LLM end-users and their intimate relationship with the technology. So I’m wondering who/what is the subject: AI or humans? I’m half-tempted to upload the article to discuss with my ChatGPT. 😉
