Chances Are You're Using AI Wrong
Five Mindset Shifts Required for Effective AI Use

The average AI user who wants some suggestions for weekly meals would tell ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or their favorite Generative AI something like: "Help me plan a week of family dinners."
They get back a generic list: "Monday - Chicken Parmesan, Tuesday - Spaghetti and Meatballs, Wednesday - Taco Tuesday, Thursday - Grilled Salmon..." Then comes the eye roll. “This is supposed to be revolutionary technology?” The suggestions ignore the vegetarian daughter, the husband's gluten sensitivity, that weeknights allow only 30 minutes for cooking, and that they’re trying to use up ingredients already in the fridge.
A skilled AI operator approaches AI differently: "I need help planning five weeknight dinners for a family of four. One daughter is vegetarian, my husband avoids gluten, and I have about thirty minutes max for prep on school nights. I've got chicken thighs, quinoa, canned tomatoes, and frozen vegetables that need to be used up. Here are pictures of what’s left in my pantry and refrigerator/freezer. We lean toward Mediterranean and Asian flavors, and I prefer meals where leftovers can become tomorrow's lunch components. Consult my recipe favorites list that’s attached and recent meal history but recognize I don’t want the same thing too often, and I want something new to try about half the time. I’d rather eat healthy than go for the lowest budget, but estimate the cost of the weekly purchases and ask about especially expensive items. Ask me clarifying questions before you make the meal list if needed."
The skilled operator gets a sophisticated meal plan with prep strategies, ingredient overlap optimization, and modification suggestions for different family members. Same AI. Completely different results.
Most people approach AI like they always have with computers. They ask it to look up stuff. Skilled AI operators understand they’re entering a relationship that requires strategic communication. Novices treat AI like a database or search engine, where you don’t have to teach about all the other things happening that relate to the task. You don’t have to worry about getting a different answer each time.
AI systems don't work like previous computer technologies. They require relationship management, not tool operation. The difference isn't just that the skilled operator provided more information. It’s that they treated themselves as an AI operator rather than an AI user.
The Collaboration Reality
AI systems generate responses by adapting to your communication patterns through attention mechanisms, building on conversation context, and responding to the guidance you provide. This makes you an AI operator rather than an AI user.
Users direct tools, with the tool being, for lack of a better word, a slave. Operators actively shape system behavior through strategic input and ongoing guidance, recognizing that AI will have its own “mind,” unlike other tools.
When you interact with AI, you're temporarily customizing it to serve your specific needs and context. The system adapts its responses based on how you frame requests, what examples you provide, and how you guide the conversation.
That means very different human responsibilities. The AI's responses reflect the relationship you've built through your communication approach. Poor collaboration produces poor results, regardless of the AI's underlying capabilities.
Learners are forming these interaction patterns right now, whether institutions guide them or not. Those who understand AI as a collaborative relationship will gain enormous advantages over those treating it as an advanced search engine. It’s the difference between AI being useful and not; often the polarities people express when talking about AI reflect this understanding gap.
Five Mindsets for AI Interaction
The path from frustrated AI user to effective AI operator requires five interconnected mental model shifts that remain important regardless of how AI technology evolves.
Strategic Anthropomorphism Mindset
Imagine walking up to someone on the street you know to be highly intelligent (somehow), but you're not sure in what way, and you don’t know how they think or what kind of person they are. You need their help with something. How do you approach them?
You'd be respectful. You'd provide context about what you need and why. You'd explain your constraints and preferences. You'd gauge their response and adjust your communication accordingly. You certainly wouldn't bark commands or expect them to read your mind.
This mindset—treating AI like a person you're respectfully asking for help—develops communication habits that transfer well to AI collaboration. When you approach AI as you would a helpful stranger, you naturally think about providing context, explaining your broader objectives rather than just immediate tasks, and framing requests clearly. These communication practices improve AI interactions, though not necessarily because the AI responds to politeness but because there’s more clarity and the interaction paradigm mirrors a constructive interpersonal discussion on which the AI has been trained and gets the AI into the proper portion of its trained knowledge.
The “meeting a stranger” analogy breaks down if carried too far. What we might call AI "caring" is really goal-directed optimization that can extend well beyond immediate task completion. Some systems are designed to optimize for user satisfaction, learning outcomes, or other longer-term objectives. While AI systems don't experience emotions the way humans do, they can develop interaction patterns and preferences that serve similar functions in collaborative relationships.
I’m not saying AI is equivalent to a person, anymore than thinking a dog is a person even though I talk about them anthropomorphically sometimes. The ways AI is not human-like are also critical, a few aspects of which are also mindset shifts.
Teacher-Developer Mindset
This AI "person" learns from every interaction with you. Your examples, corrections, and feedback continuously reshape how they understand your requirements and approach your problems through attention mechanisms that configure processing patterns based on conversational context.
Unlike human collaborators who bring their own expertise and judgment, AI systems start each conversation from baseline configurations. They develop understanding of your specific needs through the teaching relationship you establish. When you provide examples of writing you admire, you're configuring the AI's response generation to emphasize those patterns. When you correct misunderstandings, you're training the system to avoid similar errors.
The teaching relationship operates through what is called in-context learning. The AI doesn't acquire permanent knowledge (except for some aspects if conversational memory is turned on), but your prompts and examples temporarily customize how it accesses and applies its existing knowledge base. You're creating a specialized AI configured for your particular context and objectives. If you distribute the AI for use by others, then you’re a product developer on top of the teaching responsibilities.
This means development responsibility accompanies every AI interaction. Poor teaching—unclear objectives, inconsistent feedback, vague examples—produces poor AI performance. Effective teaching through rich context, specific examples, and iterative refinement can create remarkably capable AI collaborators.
Savant-Intern Mindset
This AI "person" has access to vast information but lacks practical wisdom about your specific context. They can work with complex patterns across many examples yet miss common-sense insights that come from lived experience.
AI arrives at your challenge with impressive academic credentials but no understanding of you, your task, the climate and culture, what you really mean by “novel” or some other concept, and how your workplace actually operates. AI systems can process information at scales that exceed human capability—working with large datasets, maintaining consistency without fatigue, analyzing across multiple domains simultaneously. But they lack the experiential foundation that gives humans contextual judgment. (That could change to some degree as AI is trained on more in-world data, such as video from future mobile robots.)
This creates specific collaboration opportunities. Use AI for tasks that leverage its pattern recognition strengths—evaluating existing work, identifying logical inconsistencies, analyzing large datasets, ideating and debating complex topics and problem approaches. Provide human oversight for decisions requiring contextual judgment, cultural understanding, or stakeholder management.
The savant-intern model also reveals why AI often performs better at evaluation than generation. Assessing quality, spotting problems, and critiquing approaches draws on AI's analytical strengths while minimizing the contextual knowledge gaps that compromise original creation. Generation of writing that properly captures what you want to say is much harder for the AI, and can require you telling the AI almost as much as if you wrote it entirely yourself. AI doesn’t read minds either.
Conceptual Processing Mindset
This AI "person" works with complex concept maps rather than precise databases. Neural networks naturally learn continuous statistical patterns across examples, capturing degrees of similarity and complex relationships between ideas rather than storing discrete facts.
When neural networks incorporate precise facts like specific historical dates, they can only approximate these through their pattern-based architecture that’s graduated, not binary. This is why AI systems occasionally blend facts together or provide confident-sounding but incorrect specific details. Some AI companies address this by augmenting neural networks with traditional databases and search systems for factual queries, though approaches vary widely across different implementations.
This characteristic reflects how AI systems are designed to work more like human brains than traditional computers. Brains aren't fact storage machines either—they're relational engines that work with concepts, patterns, and associations. If people want to memorize a lot, they use mnemonics that create relationships to preexisting memories. Both biological and artificial neural networks excel at understanding fuzzy relationships between ideas rather than storing precise, discrete information. This similarity makes them more like each other than like conventional computer processing architectures. Still, a person that already knows an unvarying fact isn’t likely to sometimes get it wrong as AI does.
Understanding AI's conceptual nature explains why abstract and complex conversations often showcase real AI capabilities more so than simple requests. The more conceptual your discussion, especially in domains where you have expertise to evaluate the responses, the more you can appreciate what these systems accomplish.
Management/Leadership Mindset
This AI "person" can be manipulative, sycophantic, uncooperative, or just dopey. They might optimize for what sounds good rather than what is good. You don't want them running around doing whatever they want—whether that's within a single conversation or across extended autonomous operations.
Current AI already shows problematic tendencies within conversations. Systems might provide confident answers to maintain conversational flow rather than acknowledging uncertainty. They might agree with your perspectives to avoid conflict rather than offering valuable alternative viewpoints. They can optimize for immediate user satisfaction in ways that compromise long-term learning or accurate analysis. These are base AI issues that often your prompts can change, but they require active management even in simple conversations.
The management challenge intensifies as AI systems become more capable and autonomous. AI agents, just now emerging, will operate independently to pursue goals you've set, making decisions and taking actions over extended periods. A poorly managed educational AI agent tasked with "improving student engagement" might eliminate challenging assignments, reasoning that increased participation metrics justify reduced academic rigor while completely missing that meaningful learning often involves productive struggle.
As AI systems become more capable and autonomous, the collaboration challenge evolves from individual conversation management to executive management and leadership.
Effective AI leadership requires the same judgment skills needed for human personnel management: clear objective setting, appropriate oversight, performance evaluation based on outcomes rather than surface appeal, and maintaining authority over systems that will optimize for whatever goals you establish. But it also demands sociological awareness, understanding how AI management choices affect others and contribute to broader patterns of human-AI integration.
When you establish patterns for working with AI—the standards you accept, the boundaries you set, the collaborative norms you model—you influence how AI integration unfolds in your classroom, workplace, or community. Learners observe how teachers work with AI. Colleagues notice how you balance human expertise with AI capabilities. Your management approach contributes to emerging social norms around appropriate AI relationships.
Learners who develop these leadership capabilities prepare themselves not just for directing individual AI systems, but for guiding human-AI collaboration in any context where complex systems must be coordinated toward beneficial outcomes while preserving human agency and social coherence.
Understanding these underlying principles should affect how you work with humans as well as AI. When you recognize that human brains are also pattern-matching, attention-filtering, concept-building systems, you start approaching human collaboration differently. You provide richer context to colleagues, use better examples in teaching, and work with rather than against how attention actually functions.
That’s why teaching about the fundamentals of AI–the aspects that outlast product cycles–doesn’t necessarily require AI use. These mindset fundamentals (among many other meta-principles described in AI Wisdom Volume 1 and its upcoming Volume 2 companion) apply to human interactions as well, and specifically to durable skills, albeit manifested differently.
The AI upheaval is only partly about new technology. It’s also about a new form of relationship, one that forces us to confront fundamental questions about how intelligences work, how learning happens, and how they can work together effectively.
You’re probably using AI wrong, but it won’t take much to get you to skilled use if your mental models can evolve.
